Misri, who previously served as Deputy National Security Adviser, has extensive experience in international diplomacy, particularly during his tenure in China amid the 2020 Galwan Valley conflict. He also held the position of Ambassador to Myanmar from 2016 to 2018, where he established significant contacts in the conflict-torn region.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar congratulated Misri on his new role, stating in a social media post, “Congratulate Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri as he assumes his new responsibility today. Wish him a productive and successful tenure.”
Born in 1964, Misri has a diverse diplomatic career, having served in Indian missions in Brussels, Tunis, Islamabad, Washington D.C., Munich, and Colombo, where he was Deputy High Commissioner. Prior to his posting in Myanmar, Misri was India's Ambassador to Spain in 2014.
In his new capacity, Misri is expected to navigate complex international issues, including the Israel-Palestine conflict, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Insiders at the Ministry of External Affairs indicate that Vinay Kwatra is anticipated to be the next Indian ambassador to Washington D.C.
Misri is recognized within foreign policy circles for his analytical acumen in understanding the political climates of his host countries. His experience in Myanmar and China is particularly notable, as he managed significant political challenges under considerable pressure.
His extensive regional experience, with postings in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, adds to his qualifications. His appointment comes at a critical time, given the escalating internal conflict in Myanmar. Notably, Misri, who is fluent in French, is one of the few envoys to China who did not speak Mandarin.
Hailing from Srinagar, Misri has also served as Private Secretary to Prime Ministers Narendra Modi, I.K. Gujral, and Manmohan Singh, reflecting his deep understanding of India's bureaucratic and national security framework. A graduate of Hindu College, University of Delhi, Misri began his career in advertising with Lintas India in Bombay and Contract Advertising in Delhi. His appointment marks a significant step in India's foreign policy strategy, as the nation navigates a rapidly changing global landscape.
