H.E. Mr. Anura Kumara Disanayaka, the newly elected President of Sri Lanka, will undertake his first State Visit to India from December 15 to 17, 2024. The visit follows the recent presidential and parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka, marking a significant step in bilateral relations between the two nations.
During his stay, President Disanayaka will meet the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, and engage in discussions with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on a range of bilateral issues of mutual interest. The deliberations are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in key areas, including trade, maritime security, and regional connectivity.
A key highlight of the visit will be President Disanayaka’s participation in a business event in New Delhi. The event aims to bolster investment opportunities and strengthen commercial linkages between India and Sri Lanka, underlining the shared commitment to economic growth and regional development.
As part of his itinerary, the Sri Lankan President will also visit Bodh Gaya, reflecting the deep cultural and historical ties between the two countries rooted in Buddhism.
Sri Lanka holds a vital position in India’s strategic framework as the closest maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The visit aligns with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Prime Minister Modi’s SAGAR vision (Security and Growth for All in the Region), which emphasizes fostering stability and development in the IOR.
This landmark visit is expected to further consolidate the multi-dimensional partnership between India and Sri Lanka, reinforcing their shared commitment to regional prosperity and peace.
