Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan on Tuesday, marking their second meeting this year.

During the talks, Modi expressed gratitude to Putin for Russia’s leadership in hosting the summit and acknowledged the country's efforts to strengthen multilateralism, advance sustainable development, and push for global governance reform. The two leaders reviewed a wide range of bilateral cooperation, including political, economic, defense, and energy ties, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Both leaders welcomed the upcoming meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, and Cultural Cooperation, set for November in New Delhi, where they will discuss further strengthening economic collaboration.

Modi and Putin also exchanged views on India-Russia cooperation in multilateral forums, particularly within the BRICS framework. They discussed global and regional issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Modi reiterating India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving conflicts.

The leaders agreed to continue fostering their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” which has demonstrated resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties.

Modi extended an invitation to Putin to visit India for the 23rd Annual Summit in 2025.
