The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Canada’s Charge d’Affaires on Monday evening to protest what it described as the "baseless targeting" of Indian diplomats in Canada, including High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and other officials. The MEA criticized the Canadian government's actions, calling them "completely unacceptable" and accused it of failing to ensure a safe environment for its diplomats.
During the meeting, Secretary (East) conveyed India's strong objections to the Trudeau government’s handling of an atmosphere in Canada that India characterized as filled with extremism and violence. "The safety of our diplomats is paramount, and we have no faith in the current Canadian Government's commitment to ensuring their security," the official stated.
In light of these concerns, India announced the withdrawal of its High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats from Canada. The move underscores India's lack of confidence in the Trudeau administration's ability to guarantee their safety amidst growing fears of extremist threats.
The MEA also warned that India reserves the right to take further measures in response to what it views as Canada's ongoing support for extremism, violence, and separatist movements against India. The situation marks a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The decision to withdraw the diplomats follows a series of contentious exchanges between India and Canada, with accusations from the Indian side that the Trudeau government has not acted to curb the activities of anti-India elements on Canadian soil.
