Zelenskyy Describes Meeting with PM Modi in New York as “Very Good”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Indian PM Narendra Modi at Newyork

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed his recent meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York as "very good." The two leaders met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on Monday to discuss bilateral ties and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy, speaking to ANI on Tuesday, reiterated his positive view of the meeting. He noted that the talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and working toward a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's consistent position, advocating for a peaceful resolution through diplomacy and dialogue. Modi assured Zelenskyy that India is willing to provide support, within its means, to help achieve lasting peace in the region.

This marks the third meeting between the two leaders in just over three months. In August, Modi made a historic visit to Ukraine, the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country since diplomatic relations were established in 1992. Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication moving forward.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi emphasized India’s commitment to supporting a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. He wrote, “Met President @ZelenskyyUa in New York. We are committed to implementing the outcomes of my visit to Ukraine last month to strengthen bilateral relations. Reiterated India’s support for early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and restoration of peace and stability.”

India has consistently called for peace through dialogue since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The country has expressed its willingness to facilitate efforts for a peaceful settlement.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, following PM Modi’s U.S. visit, highlighted that President Zelenskyy appreciated India’s efforts, particularly Modi’s recent engagement with Ukraine. Misri added that the bilateral meeting between Modi and Zelenskyy was requested by the Ukrainian side.

Misri also noted that Modi has maintained open dialogue with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden, with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval recently visiting Russia to further discussions on the ongoing conflict. Modi has consistently advocated for peace in conversations with world leaders, echoing Mahatma Gandhi's belief that “peace is the path.”

Zelenskyy echoed the sentiment of optimism regarding bilateral relations, stating on X, “This is already the third bilateral meeting this year with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. We are actively developing our relations and working together to strengthen cooperation across various fields.”

The Ukrainian President also emphasized the importance of international cooperation, particularly within the frameworks of the United Nations and G20. Both leaders discussed further steps in advancing Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula and preparations for the second Peace Summit.

Both leaders expressed optimism about their growing cooperation and agreed to stay in close contact for future exchanges and visits at various levels.
