External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar Speaking at the foreign ministerial conclave of the Quad on Monday

In a
firm assertion of India's commitment to the Quad, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted the grouping's responsibility in upholding a rules-based order, crucial for maintaining a free and secure Indo-Pacific region. Speaking at the foreign ministerial conclave of the Quad on Monday, Jaishankar emphasized that the Quad is "here to stay, here to do, and here to go," signaling its long-term role in the region amid growing concerns over China's increasing assertiveness.

Jaishankar underscored the shared values among Quad members—India, the United States, Japan, and Australia—as political democracies, pluralistic societies, and market economies. He stressed the importance of collaboration to ensure the Indo-Pacific remains open, stable, secure, and prosperous. “It is only our collaboration that can ensure that the Indo-Pacific remains free, remains open, stable, secure, and prosperous,” he said, adding that the commitment to global good extends far beyond the region.

The meeting was attended by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, and Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong. Wong, without directly naming China, highlighted the necessity of respecting sovereignty and responsibly managing competition in the region. She called for collective efforts to build a region where “no country dominates, and no country is dominated,” reinforcing the Quad's vision of an inclusive Indo-Pacific.

Jaishankar also addressed the global economic challenges posed by ongoing geopolitical turmoil, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Hamas-Israel hostilities. He stressed the need for resilient supply chains and trusted digital partnerships to ensure global economic growth while mitigating risks. “These are not easy times. A major challenge is to ensure global economic growth while also de-risking it,” Jaishankar noted, pointing to the evolving global landscape as an opportunity for “re-globalization.”

The Quad's foreign ministers are expected to discuss the implications of current global conflicts and strategize on enhancing their collaboration in technology, economy, and security. Jaishankar's remarks come at a time when the Quad's role in the Indo-Pacific is increasingly seen as pivotal in countering regional threats and ensuring long-term peace and stability.
